Weighted blankets have moved from occupational therapy clinics to mainstream retail, with the market growing from $200 million in 2018 to over $1.2 billion in 2025. The core claim — that a heavy blanket reduces anxiety and improves sleep through deep pressure stimulation — has a plausible mechanism and partial research support. But the market is now saturated with options ranging from $30 to $300, with varying weights, fill materials, fabrics, and construction methods. Here is what the science says about who benefits, how to choose the right specifications, and what the evidence does and does not support.

How deep pressure stimulation works

Deep pressure stimulation (DPS) is the application of firm, distributed pressure across a large area of the body.
