A smart lock replaces or augments your deadbolt with electronic access control. Instead of only a physical key, you can unlock your door with a smartphone, a numeric code, a fingerprint, or voice commands through a smart home system. The convenience appeal is obvious: no more hiding keys under doormats, no more lockouts, and a log of every entry and exit. But smart locks sit at the intersection of physical security and digital security, and the wrong choice can make your home less secure rather than more. We evaluated 14 smart locks across six brands, assessing build quality, wireless reliability, battery life, security certifications, and installation complexity. Here is what to consider before you buy.

What a smart lock actually replaces

Smart locks come in three form factors, and the distinction matters for both security and installation. A retrofit smart lock (like the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock) replaces only the interior portion of your existing deadbolt. You keep your existing exterior hardware and your physical key. The smart lock motor turns the deadbolt from inside, and a sensor detects the locked or unlocked position. Retrofit locks are the simplest to install: four screws and a battery connection, typically under 15 minutes. They are also the most renter-friendly because you can swap back to the original hardware when you move out.

A full-replacement smart lock (like the Schlage Encode Plus) replaces your entire deadbolt assembly: both the interior and exterior hardware. These locks typically add a keypad or touchscreen to the exterior for code-based entry. Installation requires removing the existing deadbolt and installing new hardware in the same bore holes, which takes 20 to 40 minutes. Full-replacement locks generally look more polished because the interior and exterior hardware are designed as a matched set.

A smart lock with handle (like the Lockly Visage) replaces both your deadbolt and your door handle with a single integrated unit. These are the most feature-rich (often including fingerprint scanners and cameras) but also the most complex to install and the most expensive. They require both the deadbolt bore and the handle bore to match specific dimensions.

Wireless protocols: how the lock talks to your phone

Every smart lock uses at least one wireless protocol to communicate with your smartphone or smart home system. The protocol determines range, battery life, response speed, and smart home compatibility.

Bluetooth. Nearly all smart locks include Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for direct phone-to-lock communication. Bluetooth range is limited to about 30 feet, so you must be near the door to unlock via Bluetooth. The advantage is simplicity and low power consumption: Bluetooth does not require a hub or internet connection and has minimal impact on battery life. The disadvantage is range: if you want to unlock remotely (while at work, for example) or receive notifications, Bluetooth alone is insufficient.

Wi-Fi. Smart locks with built-in Wi-Fi connect directly to your home network, enabling remote access, notifications, and voice assistant integration without any additional hub. Wi-Fi is convenient but consumes significantly more power than Bluetooth: Wi-Fi-enabled locks typically need battery replacement every 3 to 6 months versus 6 to 12 months for Bluetooth-only locks. We measured a 40 to 60 percent reduction in battery life when Wi-Fi was enabled on dual-protocol locks.

Z-Wave and Zigbee. These are mesh networking protocols designed for smart home devices. They require a compatible hub (SmartThings, Hubitat, or similar) but offer lower power consumption than Wi-Fi while still enabling remote access through the hub's internet connection. Battery life with Z-Wave or Zigbee is comparable to Bluetooth-only locks. The downside is the hub requirement: if you do not already have a Z-Wave or Zigbee hub, adding one for a single lock costs $50 to $130 and adds complexity.

Matter over Thread. Matter is the newest smart home standard, designed to unify the fragmented ecosystem. Thread is the networking protocol that Matter uses for low-power devices like locks. Thread-enabled locks can communicate with any Matter-compatible hub (Apple HomePod, Google Nest, Amazon Echo, SmartThings) without brand-specific requirements. Battery life is excellent because Thread is optimized for low power consumption. The limitation is that Matter-compatible smart locks are still relatively new, and the selection is smaller than Bluetooth or Wi-Fi options.

Our recommendation: If you already use Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa as your primary smart home platform, choose a lock that supports your platform natively. If you do not have a smart home system and want the simplest setup, a lock with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is the most straightforward: it works with your phone directly and does not require a hub.

Security: the non-negotiable specifications

A smart lock that is easy to bypass electronically or physically is worse than a basic deadbolt because it provides a false sense of security. Here is what to verify before purchasing.

ANSI/BHMA grade. The American National Standards Institute and the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association grade locks on a three-tier scale. Grade 1 is commercial quality: 800,000 cycles, withstands 75-pound force strikes. Grade 2 is residential quality: 400,000 cycles, withstands 50-pound force strikes. Grade 3 is basic residential: 200,000 cycles, withstands 35-pound force strikes. Many smart locks carry no ANSI/BHMA grade at all, which means their physical security has not been independently tested. We strongly recommend Grade 2 or higher for any exterior door lock.

Encryption. Communications between the lock, your phone, and the cloud should be encrypted with AES-128 or AES-256 encryption. Most reputable smart lock brands use this level of encryption, but budget and no-name brands sometimes use weaker or proprietary encryption. Ask the manufacturer or check the specification sheet. If they do not publish their encryption standard, consider it a red flag.

Physical key backup. The best smart lock setup includes a physical key backup. Electronics fail, batteries die, and software has bugs. A lock that becomes inoperable when the battery dies and has no key backup means you are locked out of your home until you can replace the batteries, which you cannot do from outside the door. Most full-replacement smart locks include a physical keyhole. Retrofit locks typically retain your existing key. Locks that rely solely on electronic access (keypads, fingerprints, phones) should have an emergency power option, such as a USB port that accepts a portable battery to provide temporary power for unlocking.

Auto-lock and auto-unlock reliability. Auto-lock re-engages the deadbolt after a set time period (30 seconds to 5 minutes, configurable). Auto-unlock uses your phone's location to detect when you approach the door and unlocks it hands-free. In our testing, auto-lock was reliable across all brands: it functioned correctly 99 percent or more of the time. Auto-unlock was significantly less reliable, correctly detecting our approach and unlocking 70 to 85 percent of the time depending on the brand and phone model. Failed auto-unlocks meant standing at the door waiting and eventually pulling out the phone to unlock manually. If auto-unlock reliability is important to you, test it during any return period before committing.

Installation: what to measure before you order

Smart lock installation failures are almost always caused by incompatible door dimensions, not by difficulty with the installation itself. Before ordering any smart lock, measure these dimensions on your door.

Door thickness. Most smart locks accommodate doors between 1-3/8 inches and 1-3/4 inches thick, which covers standard residential doors. If your door is thinner (common in older homes) or thicker (some high-end or commercial doors), verify compatibility. Some locks include extension kits for thicker doors; others simply do not fit.

Backset. This is the distance from the center of the deadbolt bore hole to the edge of the door. The two standard backsets are 2-3/8 inches and 2-3/4 inches. Most smart locks include hardware for both, but verify before purchasing. A non-standard backset requires a specific lock or adapter.

Cross bore and edge bore. The cross bore is the large hole through the face of the door (standard is 2-1/8 inches diameter). The edge bore is the hole on the edge of the door where the bolt extends (standard is 1 inch diameter). Smart locks almost universally use these standard dimensions, but older doors occasionally have non-standard bores that require modification.

Door handedness. Determine whether your door is left-handed or right-handed (which side the hinges are on, which direction it opens). Most smart locks are ambidextrous and adjust during installation, but some keypads and fingerprint scanners are designed for a specific orientation.

Battery life and power management

Smart locks run on batteries, typically four AA or four CR123A lithium batteries. Battery life depends heavily on usage patterns and wireless protocols. Our testing showed the following ranges under normal residential use, which we defined as 10 lock and unlock cycles per day.

Every smart lock we tested provided low-battery warnings through the app, typically when approximately 20 percent battery remained. Some also beep or flash a light on the lock itself. We recommend replacing batteries as soon as the first low-battery notification appears. Running batteries to depletion risks a lockout and can cause erratic lock behavior as voltage drops.

Some smart locks offer rechargeable battery options. The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, for example, uses a rechargeable battery pack that charges via USB-C. Rechargeable options eliminate ongoing battery costs but require remembering to charge the lock, which is less convenient than replacing disposable batteries twice a year.

Access management: sharing access with others

One of the strongest practical benefits of smart locks is granular access control. Instead of copying physical keys (which cannot be un-copied), you can issue and revoke digital access with full control over who can enter and when.

Most smart locks offer several access tiers: permanent access for household members (phone-based unlock with full privileges), scheduled access that works only during specific time windows (useful for housekeepers or dog walkers), temporary access with an expiration date (for guests or contractors), and one-time codes that work once and then expire. The sophistication of access management varies by brand: Schlage and Yale offer robust scheduling and user management, while budget locks may only support permanent and temporary access without time-based scheduling.

Shared access typically requires the other person to install the lock manufacturer's app. Some locks also support access via Apple Home Key, which stores a digital key in the iPhone or Apple Watch Wallet app. This is the most seamless sharing experience we tested: the recipient taps a notification, and the key appears in their Wallet. No separate app installation required.

Activity logging is standard on all smart locks we tested. Every lock and unlock event is recorded with the method used (code, phone, key, auto-lock) and, for code-based access, which specific code was used. This creates a useful audit trail: you can see when the housekeeper arrived, when the kids got home from school, and whether the door was left unlocked overnight. Logs are stored in the app and typically retained for 30 to 90 days, depending on the brand.

What we recommend

For most homeowners, a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth smart lock with a keypad and physical key backup offers the best combination of convenience, security, and reliability. Choose one with an ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 or higher rating, AES-128 or better encryption, and native compatibility with your existing smart home platform. Budget $150 to $300 for a quality lock from an established brand. Avoid unbranded locks from unfamiliar manufacturers regardless of price: your front door is not the place to save $50 on an untested product.

For renters, a retrofit smart lock that preserves the existing exterior hardware is the cleanest solution. You get smart features without modifying hardware you do not own, and you can remove it when you move. Budget $100 to $200.

For tech-forward households already invested in a smart home ecosystem, a Matter-over-Thread lock is the most future-proof choice.
