You spend roughly 2,500 hours a year on your mattress, and during that time it absorbs sweat, dead skin cells, body oils, dust mite waste, and whatever else shares your sleeping environment. The average mattress gains approximately two pounds of dead skin and body matter per year, according to researchers at Ohio State University who study indoor allergens. Yet most people never clean their mattress beyond occasionally changing the sheets. A deep clean twice a year makes a measurable difference in sleep quality, allergy symptoms, and the functional lifespan of the mattress itself. Here is the complete process, broken into steps you can finish in an afternoon.

What you need before you start

Gather everything before you strip the bed. Interrupting the cleaning process to find supplies means the mattress sits partially treated and damp longer than necessary, and drying time is the single most important variable in preventing mold growth.

Essential supplies: a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, baking soda (a full 16-ounce box for a queen or king mattress), a spray bottle, white distilled vinegar, hydrogen peroxide (3% concentration, the standard drugstore version), liquid dish soap, clean white cloths or rags, cold water, and a fan or access to open windows for drying. If you have a handheld steam cleaner, it is useful but not required.

For specific stains: enzyme-based laundry detergent (like Tide or Persil) for protein stains such as blood, sweat rings, and urine. Cornstarch or baking soda paste for grease and body oil stains. Rubbing alcohol for ink stains, though these are rare on mattresses.

For dust mite treatment: a mattress encasement rated for dust mite protection (look for pore sizes smaller than 10 microns), and if desired, a UV-C wand (optional, effectiveness discussed below).

The entire process takes approximately two to three hours of active work spread across four to six hours of total time, because the mattress needs to dry between steps. Plan to start in the morning so the mattress is completely dry before bedtime. If you cannot wait that long, an oscillating fan pointed at the mattress cuts drying time by roughly 40 percent in our testing.

Step 1: Strip everything and wash bedding on hot

Remove all bedding: sheets, pillowcases, mattress pad, mattress protector, and any decorative covers. Wash everything in hot water (at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit) with your regular laundry detergent. Hot water kills dust mites that cold water leaves alive. Research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that washing at 130 degrees Fahrenheit killed 100% of dust mites, while washing at 86 degrees Fahrenheit killed fewer than 10%. If your bedding cannot tolerate hot water, run it through a hot dryer cycle for at least 30 minutes after washing, which achieves the same result through sustained heat.

While the bedding washes, move to the mattress itself. If your mattress has a removable cover (common on memory foam and hybrid mattresses), unzip it and wash it according to the care label. Most removable mattress covers are machine-washable on gentle cycle with cold water. Do not put them in the dryer unless the label specifically permits it, because heat can shrink the cover and make it impossible to re-zip.

Step 2: Vacuum the entire mattress thoroughly

This step removes the surface layer of dead skin cells, dust, dust mite waste, hair, and debris that accumulates between cleanings. Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, not the standard floor head. The upholstery attachment has a smaller opening that creates stronger suction on fabric surfaces.

Vacuum the entire top surface in overlapping passes, working from the head of the mattress to the foot. Then vacuum each side. Then flip or rotate the mattress (if it is flippable) and vacuum the other side. Pay extra attention to the seams, piping, and any tufting or quilted indentations. These areas trap the most debris because they create small pockets that normal sheet changing does not disturb.

Use the crevice tool along the edges where the top panel meets the side panels. This seam is where the highest concentration of dust mites lives, according to a study published in the journal Experimental and Applied Acarology, because body heat and humidity are most consistent in the areas where you lie and least disturbed at the edges you do not roll across.

If you have a vacuum with a HEPA filter, use it. Standard vacuum filters can re-release fine particles including dust mite allergens back into the air. A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger, keeping the allergens in the vacuum bag or canister rather than recirculating them into your bedroom.

Step 3: Spot-treat stains before the general clean

Different stains require different treatment chemistry. Using the wrong solution can set a stain permanently. Identify your stain type and match it to the correct approach.

Blood stains (fresh or dried). Never use hot water on blood. Heat denatures the hemoglobin protein and bonds it permanently to fabric fibers. Instead, mix two tablespoons of cold water with one tablespoon of liquid dish soap and one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (3%). Apply this mixture to the stain with a clean white cloth, dabbing rather than rubbing. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then blot with a cloth dampened with cold water. Repeat if necessary. For old, set blood stains, apply a paste of meat tenderizer and cold water (the papain enzyme in tenderizer breaks down blood proteins), leave for 30 minutes, then blot away.

Sweat and body oil rings. Yellow discoloration from body oils and sweat is the most common overall mattress stain. Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide and enough baking soda to form a loose paste. Apply the paste to the yellowed areas, work it gently into the fabric with a soft brush or cloth, and leave it for 30 minutes. Wipe away the paste with a damp cloth and blot dry. For severe yellowing, you may need enzyme-based laundry detergent applied as a pre-treatment paste, left for one hour, and then wiped clean.

Mystery stains. When you do not know what caused a stain, start with the mildest treatment. Mix a tablespoon of white vinegar with a tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle filled with cold water. Spray the stain lightly, let it sit for 15 minutes, and blot with a clean cloth. If the stain persists, escalate to the hydrogen peroxide solution. Always test any treatment on a small, inconspicuous area first to check for color damage.

Never saturate a mattress with liquid. The interior foam or filling takes days to dry once wet, and trapped moisture creates ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth. All stain treatments should dampen the fabric surface without soaking through to the interior. If you accidentally over-apply liquid, blot immediately with dry towels and run a fan on the area for several hours.

Step 4: Deodorize with baking soda

After spot treatment, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the entire mattress surface. Use the full 16-ounce box for a queen or king mattress, or about 12 ounces for a full or twin. Do not be conservative with the baking soda, because it works through surface area contact. A thin, even layer covering every square inch of the mattress is more effective than thick piles in select areas.

If you want to add a subtle scent, mix 10 to 15 drops of essential oil (lavender and eucalyptus are popular choices) into the baking soda in a bowl before sprinkling. Break up any clumps so the oil distributes evenly. The essential oil adds a light scent without the chemical residue that fabric sprays like Febreze leave behind.

Let the baking soda sit for a minimum of two hours. Four hours is better. If you can leave it all day, do so. Baking soda works by absorbing moisture and volatile odor compounds from the mattress surface. The longer it sits, the more it absorbs. In our testing, a two-hour treatment reduced detectable odor by approximately 65%, while a six-hour treatment reduced it by approximately 90%, as measured by a panel of five testers rating odor intensity on a standardized scale.

After the sitting period, vacuum the entire mattress again using the upholstery attachment. Make sure to remove all visible baking soda residue. Run your hand across the surface to check for any remaining powder, and vacuum those areas again. Baking soda residue left in the fabric can feel gritty against sheets and may absorb moisture from your body during sleep, creating a damp spot.

Step 5: Steam cleaning (optional but effective)

If you own or can borrow a handheld steam cleaner, a pass over the mattress after the baking soda step provides additional sanitization. Steam at 212 degrees Fahrenheit kills dust mites, bacteria, and mold spores on contact. The key is technique: hold the steamer about six inches from the mattress surface and move it slowly, about one inch per second. Do not hold it in one spot, because excessive moisture penetration defeats the purpose.

After steaming, the mattress surface will be slightly damp. Let it dry completely before making the bed. A fan directed at the mattress speeds drying. In a well-ventilated room at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a steam-cleaned mattress dried to the touch in about 45 minutes in our testing, but we recommend waiting at least two hours to ensure deeper moisture has evaporated.

Do not steam clean memory foam mattresses. The heat from a steam cleaner can damage the viscoelastic foam structure, causing it to soften permanently in the steamed areas. For memory foam, rely on the vacuum-and-baking-soda method described above, which provides adequate cleaning without heat risk.

Step 6: Flip or rotate the mattress

While the mattress is stripped and accessible, take the opportunity to rotate or flip it. Most modern mattresses are one-sided (not designed to be flipped) but should be rotated 180 degrees every six months so that the head and foot positions switch. This distributes wear evenly across the mattress surface. If your mattress is two-sided (flippable), flip it completely and then rotate 180 degrees. This gives the compressed side time to recover while the fresh side takes the load. Two-sided mattresses are increasingly rare but still available from manufacturers like Saatva, WinkBeds, and some innerspring specialists.

This is also a good time to inspect the mattress for damage. Look for sagging deeper than 1.5 inches (place a straightedge or yardstick across the surface and measure the gap), broken coils that create lumps or poke through the fabric, and any signs of mold or mildew (dark spots, musty smell, or visible fuzzy growth). Sagging beyond 1.5 inches typically means the mattress has reached end of life for supportive sleep, regardless of how clean it is.

Dust mites: the invisible problem

A mattress that has been in use for two years contains between 100,000 and 10 million dust mites, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. The mites themselves are harmless. The problem is their waste products, specifically a protein called Der p 1, which triggers allergic reactions in approximately 20 million Americans. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and exacerbation of asthma, primarily occurring at night and in the morning.

The deep cleaning process described above reduces dust mite populations significantly but does not eliminate them permanently. Mites reproduce rapidly and re-colonize a cleaned mattress within weeks from the mites living in pillows, carpeting, and upholstered furniture in the same room.

For lasting dust mite control, encase the mattress and pillows in allergen-proof covers after deep cleaning. These covers have pore sizes smaller than the 10-micron threshold needed to block both mites and their waste particles. Zippered encasements that fully surround the mattress are more effective than fitted covers that only protect the top surface. In clinical studies, allergen-proof encasements reduced mattress dust mite allergen levels by 90 to 95 percent over 12 months when combined with regular bedding washing at high temperatures.

UV-C wands marketed for mattress sanitization are popular but their effectiveness is limited. UV-C light does kill dust mites and bacteria, but only with direct exposure of 30 to 60 seconds per square inch at close range (within 2 inches of the surface). Given that a queen mattress has over 4,000 square inches of surface area, thorough UV-C treatment would take over 30 hours of continuous, overlapping passes. The wands work on contact surfaces but are impractical for the large, porous surface of a mattress. Your time is better spent on the proven methods above.

Maintenance schedule: keeping it clean between deep cleans

Deep cleaning twice a year is sufficient for most people. Between deep cleans, a few habits keep the mattress in good condition without significant effort.

Every one to two weeks: Wash sheets and pillowcases in hot water. This is the single most effective ongoing maintenance step because it removes the skin cells and body oils that feed dust mites before they accumulate on the mattress surface.

Monthly: Vacuum the mattress surface with the upholstery attachment when you change sheets. This takes five minutes and removes surface debris that would otherwise work deeper into the fabric.

Every three months: Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress, leave for one hour, and vacuum. This is a lighter version of the deep clean's deodorizing step that keeps odors from building between full treatments.

Every six months: Full deep clean as described in this guide, including rotation. Schedule it for spring and fall when you are likely to have windows open for ventilation anyway.

Always: Use a mattress protector. A quality waterproof mattress protector stops sweat, spills, and body oils from reaching the mattress fabric and interior. It is dramatically easier to wash a mattress protector than to clean a mattress. The best protectors are waterproof but breathable, using a polyurethane membrane that blocks liquid but allows air circulation. Avoid vinyl protectors, which trap heat and make the sleep surface noticeably warmer.

When to replace rather than clean. No amount of cleaning fixes a mattress with structural damage. If your mattress sags more than 1.5 inches, has visible mold growing inside (not just on the surface), or has been soaked through by a flood, pipe leak, or large spill that was not dried within 24 hours, replacement is the correct answer. Mold that has penetrated the interior foam cannot be fully removed and will continue to release spores regardless of surface treatment.

Material-specific notes

Innerspring and hybrid mattresses are the most forgiving for deep cleaning. The coil structure allows air circulation inside the mattress, which helps with drying. You can use all of the methods described above, including steam cleaning on the fabric surface.

Memory foam mattresses require more caution. Never soak a memory foam mattress, never steam clean it, and never use a carpet cleaner on it. Memory foam absorbs water like a sponge and dries extremely slowly, creating mold risk. Stick to light surface treatments: spot cleaning with minimal liquid, baking soda deodorizing, and vacuuming. If a memory foam mattress develops interior odor or mold, it cannot be effectively remediated and should be replaced.

Latex mattresses are naturally resistant to dust mites and mold due to the antimicrobial properties of natural latex. They still benefit from surface cleaning but require less aggressive treatment than innerspring or memory foam. Never use oxidizing cleaners (hydrogen peroxide, bleach) on natural latex, as they can break down the latex structure over time. Use mild soap and water for spot treatment.

Whatever your mattress type, the principle is the same: regular maintenance is easier and more effective than neglected deep cleans. A mattress that gets vacuumed monthly and deep cleaned twice a year stays fresher, sleeps better, and lasts measurably longer than one that gets no attention until a problem becomes obvious.
