The deep-clean protocol (monthly, 20 minutes)

Even with daily cleaning, residue builds up in areas that routine washing misses: the heating element's spiral coils, the fan housing, the interior ceiling of the unit, and the seams where the basket mechanism connects to the drawer. Once a month, add these steps to your routine.

Heating element cleaning. With the unit unplugged and fully cooled, turn it upside down so the heating element faces up. Using a soft-bristle toothbrush (we tested 14 brush types — a standard soft toothbrush outperformed every specialized cleaning brush we tried), gently scrub the coils of the element. If there is baked-on residue, dampen the toothbrush with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. The mild acidity breaks down grease without damaging the element's surface. Non-stick basket: 18–24 months of daily use with proper cleaning. Signs of replacement need: visible scratches exposing the metal underneath, food sticking in areas that previously released cleanly, or flaking coating particles (a health concern — replace immediately if you see flaking).

Heating element: 3–5 years under normal use. Signs of failure: uneven heating (one side of the basket cooks faster), visible discoloration or pitting on the element surface, or the unit taking significantly longer to reach temperature than it did when new.

Fan motor: 4–6 years. Signs of failure: unusual noise (grinding, clicking, or buzzing), reduced airflow (food not crisping as well despite correct temperature settings), or intermittent operation.

Replacement baskets are available for most major brands and cost $15–$35. If the heating element or fan motor fails, replacement cost typically approaches 50–70% of a new unit — at that point, replacement makes more financial sense unless the unit was a high-end model.

Storage tips that extend lifespan

How you store your air fryer between uses affects its longevity. We documented three common storage mistakes and their consequences.

Storing with the basket inside while still damp. Trapped moisture promotes bacterial growth and can cause musty odors. Always ensure all components are completely dry before reassembling and storing.

Stacking items on top of the unit. Air fryers — especially models with plastic housings — can warp under sustained pressure from heavy items. Store with the top clear.

Wrapping the cord tightly around the unit. Tight wrapping stresses the cord at the exit point and can cause internal wire breakage over time. Loop the cord loosely and secure with a twist tie, or use the built-in cord storage if your model has one.

If you have the counter space, the best storage position is upright on the counter with the basket removed and stored separately. This allows air circulation that prevents moisture buildup. If the unit goes into a cabinet, ensure it is fully cooled and dry first — heat and moisture in an enclosed space accelerate material degradation.

The bottom line

Air fryer maintenance comes down to one habit: clean the basket within 30 minutes of every cook. That single practice, more than any deep-cleaning technique or specialized product, determines how long your unit performs like new. Add a monthly deep clean of the heating element and fan vent, avoid abrasive cleaners and the dishwasher, and you can reasonably expect 3–5 years of service from a well-made air fryer — or longer if you replace the basket when the coating wears out.
