A TV panel that is half an inch thick simply cannot house speakers capable of producing full, room-filling sound. We tested eight soundbars and four bookshelf speaker pairs across three months, comparing them head-to-head in the same room at matched volume levels. The results challenged some common assumptions about convenience versus quality, and the right choice depends on factors that most buying guides overlook.

How soundbars produce sound

A soundbar is a single enclosure, typically 30 to 50 inches wide, containing multiple small speaker drivers arranged horizontally. The drivers are powered by a built-in amplifier and controlled by a built-in digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP handles equalization, virtual surround processing, and dialogue enhancement. Many soundbars include a separate wireless subwoofer for bass frequencies and rear satellite speakers for surround channels.

The engineering challenge of a soundbar is fitting multiple drivers into a shallow, narrow enclosure. The drivers are small (typically two to three inches) because the enclosure depth is limited. Small drivers cannot move enough air to produce deep bass or high volume without distortion, which is why most soundbars include a wireless subwoofer for frequencies below about 100 Hz. The horizontal arrangement of drivers creates a wide soundstage directly in front of the TV but has limited ability to project sound to the sides or behind the listener without using digital processing tricks.

Virtual surround sound in soundbars uses DSP algorithms to manipulate the signal sent to each driver, creating the perception of sound coming from the sides or behind the listener. The effectiveness of this processing varies enormously by brand, model, and room geometry. In our testing, virtual surround ranged from genuinely impressive (Sonos Arc in a room with reflective side walls) to nearly imperceptible (budget soundbars in an open-plan living area with no side walls to reflect from). The technology works best in rooms with walls within six to eight feet of the soundbar on both sides, where the reflected sound arrives at the listener's ears with the correct timing to create a surround effect.

How bookshelf speakers produce sound

A pair of bookshelf speakers places two separate enclosures on either side of the TV, each containing one or more drivers in a ported or sealed cabinet. A typical bookshelf speaker has a five-inch to six-and-a-half-inch woofer and a one-inch tweeter in a cabinet roughly 14 inches tall and eight inches deep. This larger cabinet volume and larger driver diameter produce fundamentally different physics than a soundbar's small drivers in a shallow enclosure.

Larger drivers move more air per stroke, producing deeper bass extension and higher output at lower distortion. The separate enclosures placed three to five feet apart create genuine stereo separation, meaning the left and right channels arrive at your ears from physically different locations. This produces what audio engineers call a stereo image: the illusion of instruments and voices occupying distinct positions in a three-dimensional space between and behind the speakers. A soundbar's drivers are much closer together (all within one enclosure), which narrows this image significantly.

Bookshelf speakers require an external amplifier or receiver to power them. This adds a component, cables, and a remote control to the system. It also adds flexibility: you choose the amplifier's power output, connectivity features (HDMI ARC, Bluetooth, phono input for vinyl), and room correction capabilities independently of the speakers themselves. You can upgrade amplifier and speakers separately as your needs evolve.

The single biggest audio improvement for movies is dialogue clarity. In our testing, both soundbars and bookshelf speakers dramatically improved dialogue intelligibility over built-in TV speakers. But the improvement mechanism differs: soundbars use DSP dialogue enhancement modes that boost specific frequency ranges. Bookshelf speakers reproduce the dialogue frequency range with sufficient clarity and volume naturally, without processing. The subjective result is similar, but the bookshelf speakers sound more natural because the dialogue is not artificially boosted relative to other sounds.

Sound quality comparison by price tier

Budget tier ($100 to $200). At this price, a soundbar provides a more complete package. A $150 soundbar like the Vizio V-Series includes a wireless subwoofer, HDMI ARC connectivity, and a remote. A $150 pair of bookshelf speakers (Dayton Audio B652-AIR) needs an amplifier ($50 to $80) and speaker wire ($10), pushing the total to $210 to $240. In our testing, the bookshelf speakers produced slightly better midrange clarity and stereo separation, but the soundbar with subwoofer produced meaningfully more bass impact. For the budget-conscious buyer who wants the simplest possible setup with bass, the soundbar wins at this price point.

Mid-range tier ($300 to $500). This is where the comparison starts to shift. A $400 soundbar like the Sonos Beam Gen 2 delivers excellent clarity, good bass without a subwoofer, and seamless smart home integration. But a $300 pair of bookshelf speakers (ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2) paired with a $100 mini amplifier (Fosi Audio BT20A Pro) produces sound that is noticeably superior in depth, imaging, and dynamic range. The stereo presentation from properly placed bookshelf speakers creates a listening experience that no soundbar at this price approaches. Music sounds particularly better through bookshelf speakers at this tier.

Premium tier ($800+). Premium soundbars like the Sonos Arc ($900) and Samsung HW-Q990D ($1,500) deliver impressive surround sound with upfiring and side-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos. They represent the best a single-enclosure solution can achieve. But $800 to $1,000 spent on bookshelf speakers (KEF LS50 Meta) and a capable amplifier puts you in a completely different category of audio quality. The comparison becomes unfair because the bookshelf speakers are playing a different game: precise stereo imaging, deep controlled bass, effortless dynamics, and the natural presence that comes from properly sized drivers in properly engineered cabinets. If you care about audio quality above all else, bookshelf speakers dominate at this tier.

Practical considerations beyond sound

Room layout. A soundbar sits below the TV or mounts on the wall beneath it, taking up minimal space. Bookshelf speakers need stands or shelf space on either side of the TV, and they need three to five feet of separation for proper stereo imaging. In a room where the TV is mounted above a fireplace with no surfaces on either side, bookshelf speakers may not be practical. In a room with a media console or entertainment center that can accommodate speakers on either side, bookshelf speakers integrate cleanly.

Cable management. A soundbar connects to the TV with a single HDMI ARC or optical cable. Power comes from one outlet. A bookshelf speaker setup requires speaker wire from the amplifier to each speaker (which can be hidden along baseboards or run through walls) and an HDMI cable from the TV to the amplifier. The additional cabling is manageable but not trivial, especially in rooms where the speakers are far from the TV and amplifier.

Multiple sources. If you use a game console, streaming device, and Blu-ray player, a soundbar with HDMI passthrough or ARC handles switching seamlessly. A bookshelf speaker setup with a stereo amplifier may require an HDMI switch or AV receiver, adding complexity and cost. An AV receiver replaces the stereo amplifier and adds HDMI switching, surround sound decoding, and room correction, but starts at $300 to $400, increasing the total system cost significantly.

Smart features. Many soundbars include built-in voice assistants, streaming services, and multi-room capabilities (AirPlay 2, Chromecast). Bookshelf speakers are passive components with no built-in smarts; the amplifier or receiver provides connectivity features. If whole-home audio integration and voice control are priorities, soundbars from Sonos, Bose, or Samsung offer a more integrated experience.

Subwoofer integration

Bass is the frequency range where the gap between soundbars and bookshelf speakers narrows most dramatically. Most soundbars in the $200-plus range include a wireless subwoofer that produces genuine bass impact down to 40 or 50 Hz. Bookshelf speakers, by their nature, have limited bass extension because their small cabinet volume cannot support deep low-frequency output. A typical five-inch bookshelf speaker rolls off meaningfully below 60 to 80 Hz, which means explosions, deep musical bass lines, and film scores lose their visceral impact.

Adding a powered subwoofer to a bookshelf speaker setup solves this completely. A capable subwoofer like the SVS SB-1000 Pro ($500) or the Dayton Audio SUB-1200 ($150) extends bass response to 25 to 30 Hz, far deeper than any soundbar subwoofer, and produces cleaner, more controlled low frequencies because the dedicated enclosure and amplifier are designed exclusively for bass reproduction. The combination of bookshelf speakers plus a quality subwoofer produces a 2.1 system that outperforms any single soundbar at equivalent total cost in every measurable dimension of audio quality.

The trade-off is footprint. A subwoofer is a separate box, typically 12 to 14 inches on each side, that needs floor space somewhere in the room. Corner placement works best acoustically. Wireless subwoofers (available from SVS and others) eliminate the cable run from the amplifier to the subwoofer, which simplifies installation. For rooms where a visible subwoofer is unacceptable, a soundbar with its compact wireless sub is the cleaner solution despite the audio quality compromise.

What each setup actually delivers

Soundbar advantages (simplicity, aesthetics, cost): A single-unit soundbar ($100 to $500) connects to the TV via HDMI ARC or optical cable, sits below the screen, and delivers dramatically better audio than built-in TV speakers within 10 minutes of unboxing. Premium soundbars ($300 to $1,000) include wireless subwoofers (adding bass extension that thin soundbar enclosures cannot produce) and wireless rear satellite speakers (creating a surround sound experience from a modular system). Soundbar systems are the correct choice for spaces where running speaker wire is impractical, for renters who cannot mount speakers, for aesthetics-conscious rooms where visible speakers and wiring are unacceptable, and for users who prioritize simplicity over audio fidelity.

Separate speakers advantages (sound quality, upgradability): A dedicated AV receiver ($200 to $600) paired with separate speakers ($200 to $1,000 for a 5.1 system including front left/right, center, two surrounds, and a subwoofer) produces categorically superior audio compared to a soundbar at equivalent total price. The advantage comes from physics: larger speaker enclosures produce deeper bass, more detailed midrange, and wider soundstage than the thin, narrow enclosure of a soundbar. A pair of bookshelf speakers ($100 to $300/pair) flanking a TV produces a stereo image that no soundbar can match, because the physical separation of the speakers creates true left-right sound positioning.

The middle ground (soundbar + subwoofer): For most living rooms, a quality soundbar ($200 to $400) paired with a wireless subwoofer provides 80 percent of the home theater experience at 30 percent of the complexity and cost of a separates system. The soundbar handles dialogue clarity and directional effects; the subwoofer handles the bass impact that creates the visceral movie-watching experience. This combination addresses the two most common complaints about TV audio — thin, tinny dialogue and missing bass — without the complexity of receiver setup, speaker placement, and wire management. For households that watch 2 to 3 movies per week in a standard living room (not a dedicated theater room), this configuration represents the optimal balance of audio quality, visual aesthetics, cost, and setup complexity.

The verdict: who should buy what

Buy a soundbar if you value simplicity above all else, if your room layout does not accommodate speakers on both sides of the TV, if your TV is your primary audio source (not much music listening), or if your budget is under $200 and you need bass.

Buy bookshelf speakers if you care about audio quality and are willing to accommodate the slightly more complex setup, if you listen to music through your system regularly, if your room allows proper speaker placement with three to five feet of separation, or if your budget is $300 or more and you want the most performance for the money.

The soundbar is a good-enough solution for most people in most rooms. The bookshelf speakers are a better solution for people who listen with intention. Neither is wrong, but they serve different priorities, and being honest about which priority is yours prevents both overspending and disappointment.
